About
For programmers, the game industry is old, crusty, and way behind other coding fields. The technology sucks, and the ecosystem sucks. Game engines are rigid and monolithic. For gamers, the games take hours to download, and don't work on every device, and they even cost money. The future of game dev will be web-based, and beautifully fragmented. Devs will hand-pick their favorite tools and engine parts from an open source ecosystem. The concept of a "game engine" will die. New games will be a mosaic of interoperable parts, like "this editor", and "that renderer", and "my favorite ecs framework". For gamers, these new games will be free to play, work on any device, and be instantly playable just like any YouTube video or Netflix show. My best friend and I are starting this. We're building the new tech for this ecosystem, including subscription and microtransaction infrastructure to help indie game devs with monetization. And, we're proving it all by making a great game. HEATHEN.gg will be the most awesome web game ever made -- an open source 3d multiplayer viking combat game. During Build v5, we're going to complete and launch the alpha version of the game.
